fighting to protect

our health &

our right to clean air & water

The Cherokee Concerned Citizens is a fenceline community organized to protect the health and well-being of our families and neighbors from exposure to industrial pollution.  We, the residents of Cherokee subdivision in Pascagoula, Mississippi came together officially in 2013 to take action against industrial pollution. We live near several polluting facilities, including Chevron Refinery (11th largest refinery in US with its own power plant), BP/Amoco/Enterprise (its hard to keep up with all the name changes. This company is one of the largest gas processing plants in the nation), First Chemical/Chemours (going out business as of 2021), Gulf LNG, Mississippi Phosphates (now a Superfund site), VT Halter (large shipbuilding and repair operation) and Halter Marine (formally Signal International/World Marine/Vision Technologies). The closet facility is about 1500 yards from some of the homes in our neighborhood, and all are less than half a mile away. All of these facilities release over 2 million tons of toxins into the air annually.

One of the first things we did was talk to all of our neighbors. We surveyed nearly every household and learned that a lot of us were experiencing similar health issues.  We agreed that the noise, dust, and odor pollution we had been experiencing was the cause, and it was time for action. We have been fighting ever since, for nearly a decade. We have no illusions about the powerful industries we are up against, but we believe we have a human right to life, to have clean air, water, and a healthy environment. Our neighborhood is not a safe place to live. That is why we are fighting for a just buyout for our community.  Click "Our Story" link to learn more.

Support our neighborhood buyout campaign

Over the last eight years, we have been building the case that the nearby indusrties are making us sick and slowly killing us. We have taken our own air, water, and soil samples. We have conducted our own health study. And while all of this work has brought us closer to our goal, there is still a lot more to do, all of which costs time, money, resources, and expertise. This is where you come in. We need your support.  Consider donating your time, money, resources, and/or expertise in support of our buyout campaign.
